new albums

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

I went to the album launch of Drip's sophomore effort titled Identity Theft at Magnet High Street last saturday with my cousins. I love going to these album launches because the bands perform more songs than a normal gig. Plus i get to buy a copy of the album, which would be really difficult to do if i had waited for it to be sold in record stores.

i also get to hear new bands! this time we heard Yosha, which was this 4-piece band that sounds kinda like Sino Sikat?. Yosha has a better voice though. No offense to Sino Sikat? fans as i'm also a fan of them and i have their cd. corporate lofi also played. they do some kind of hiphop jazz fusion that sounded okay. i was never a really big fan of hiphop. i notice that we Filipinos listen to hiphop because the radio stations play it over and over. who wouldn't get hooked?

so anyway, here is drip's 2nd album. i haven't listened to it in its entirety yet. hopefully later at the gym.

another album i bought this weekend is Bagetsafonik's Travelogue. now this one is well worth it! it's only P250 and you get 12 really pretty postcards that you can display wherever! way to combat piracy bagets! if every cd i buy has artwork like this, i would be more willing to shell out my hard-earned pesos! i do buy original cds of pinoy indie bands though. it's a great way to support them so they'll make more great music!

my favorite is the one on the right of the girl with a guitar. when my condo is finished, i will have these framed like a triptych and hang them on a wall somewhere where they can be appreciated. cheap art!

incubus live in manila

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
i haven't gotten over the incubus concert yet. as a matter of fact, i'm still listening to the light grenades cd over and over again. too bad they didn't play dig. also note to self: purchase more expensive tickets if you really like the artist next time. we were too far from the stage eventhough our tickets already cost 2 thousand pesos each. hmph!

BRANDON BOYD IS A GOD! ESPECIALLY WHEN HE'S SHIRTLESS!

we can't have a picture with the band personally so we just took pictures with the posters hehe.

i even saw Ramon Bautista from MTV's Ramon Bautista show! just looking at this picture puts a smile on my face!

that's my friend Kat in the red shirt.

i also saw the bassists of my two favorite pinoy bands! Paul Yap of Up Dharma Down and Lalay Lim of Urbandub. so of course i had to take a picture with them...

with my friend Shey in the white hat.

i would definitely watch Incubus again!

Your Result: You attract geeks!

Your stunning intellect and love of sci-fi and video games allures the geeks like nothing else. Maybe it is the sparkle in your eye that makes them want to text you, who knows. Geeks make good partners, but tend to be arguementative. If you are a TRUE geek magnet, you will know if that was spelled correctly, and actually care. If it is a bad-boy/bad-girl you are seeking, you are barking up the wrong tree, unless they are just 'bad' behind a PS2 console.

19east Paranaque

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
My cousin and I went to this bar in Paranaque to catch Urbandub at a Nokia event. I was surprised that they weren't asking us to pay entrance fees. We sat down two tables away from the front of the stage and asked for the menu. The beer there costs 82 pesos! Extortion to the max. I pay more than that for beer in a club, where it's usually expensive. But in a gig place?!? I was aghast.

Good thing the bands didn't suck or I would've been really pissed because we live in Cainta and had to drive all the way to Paranaque and pay the toll fee.

We watched Playphonics which was this band from Tacloban that had a vocalist that sounded like the frontwoman of the Corrs hehe. Also, a band called Astrojuan that I liked but sounded too much like Eddie Vedder, my cousin pointed out. But the vocalist was hot nonetheless. I caught Nyctinasty again but this time I saw the band members clearly since the first time I saw them was at the UP Fair and we were really far from the stage. So they were an all-girl band, nothing original there. But they were cool. The vocalist had this really short hair that shone and I was ready to pull her hair and put in on my head. And there was this butch bassist that moved really great on stage. Needless to say, the music was tight but nothing too earth-shattering.

The host also showed the new video of Urbandub's next single which was "Evidence". It had sex in it and shooting and hammer-hitting and blood and was too violent that I immediately worried that it may not be allowed to be aired on TV. It was just too scary.

Listers from the band's mailist list were complimenting the video. I found it too literal and too violent. The first video from the album was Guillotine and it also had some violence in it but it was tastefully done. I liked how it shows that some relationships are dysfunctional and the people involved hurt each other but they confuse it for love.

Anyway, when Urbandub came on I was like "p*ina!!!" Yun lang. They played a great set and I think I really like Lalay Lim hehe. There goes my lesbian tendencies again.

I asked my cousin to take a picture of me and Gabby Alipe once they were finished and she was laughing the whole time because she wasn't used to asking celebs for photos. But I still got my picture! Gabby looks angry, though. Or is that a faint smile? You tell me.

The Dawn then played their set and it was enjoyed by my cousin and her friend. I guess because The Dawn has been playing the same old songs they were playing 5 years ago hehe. They didn't even play any songs from their latest album.

So yun, sabi ng pinsan ko ang gwapo daw ni Jett Pangan. I totally agree. I told her we should approach Jett and I'll take a picture of the two of them pero nahihiya siya. Sabi ko nye sanay kaya sila dyan!

We took more photos of us posing with the Nokia letters in front of the bar.

So we left and went to this french pizza pasta place in BF Homes called Cafe Francaise. We just had beer and blueberry cheesecake. The beer was a bit less expensive than 19east but the food prices were exorbitant. Man, those south people are rich. If I had to pay these prices, I won't be able to afford gigging every weekend.

More gigs to come! Terno Night in Route 196 Katipunan on saturday with UDD, Sleepwalk Circus, Paramita and Musical O.  And then Incubus in Araneta on sunday! Music music music!!!!!!

i love this game!!

What Jorizza Means

You are fair, honest, and logical. You are a natural leader, and people respect you.

You never give up, and you will succeed... even if it takes you a hundred tries.

You are rational enough to see every part of a problem. You are great at giving other people advice.

You are well rounded, with a complete perspective on life.

You are solid and dependable. You are loyal, and people can count on you.

At times, you can be a bit too serious. You tend to put too much pressure on yourself.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something.

You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense.

You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It's easy to get you excited... which can be a good or bad thing.

You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don't stick with any one thing for very long.

You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.

You are incredibly wise and perceptive. You have a lot of life experience.

You are a natural peacemaker, and you are especially good at helping others get along.

But keeping the peace in your own life is not easy. You see things very differently, and it's hard to get you to budge.

You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection.

You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.

You have the classic "Type A" personality.

Music love :-)

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

i'm really loving Taken By Cars right now. For some reason, even though I know I'm as happy as happy can be, I'm drawn to their sad songs. (let me just clarify that sad for me doesn't mean "slow" songs but rather the lyrics that convey sadness) December 2 Chapter VII is a stand out. How can your heart not be tugged with lyrics like

and when i'm gone
i want you to wonder
and when i stop
i want you to play

and let the best of you just see right through me
cause i can't see

but i wonder where you are
no i'm never where you are
i'm in my looking glass view

always almost too close to you
i'm always almost too close to you...

haayyy, lyrics like these make me want to speak to the lyric writer and ask what she means. i demand an explanation hehe!

another song i'm liking is Shapeshifter. see lyrics below:

i can hear your conscience fall apart as i start to feel lonesome
i can feel the walls start to close in on me
maybe i can make you want to drown as i stare into your soul
can the present make it all turn mean

and if i fall, may the high place bring me down...

i'll never need another lie from you

haha, these are some great lyrics! one requirement i have with music is that the lyrics should either be dead simple but heart-tugging (like Ang Bandang Shirley's songs - patintero/sa tapat ng bahay nyo tayo maglalaro/kung saan nahahati ang daan/ng mga linyang magtuturo na kahit laro/ay mayron ding hangganan or Reindeer Section's songs - I won't leave you out of my will/But I will leave you out of my mind/For now/I won't be there to break your sweet heart/But not being there might break your sweet heart/You are my joy) or  really vague but somehow you can relate to it. i really think that writing lyrics is a lot more difficult than making it into a song (not that i have experience in these things).

another album worth listening to is the soundtrack to the film Juno. The first time I watched this movie, i fell in love with the two leads Michael Cera and Ellen Page's duet Anyone Else But You which was originally done by the Moldy Peaches. The lyrics are really sweet.

You're a part time lover and a full time friend
The monkey on you're back is the latest trend
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

Here is the church and here is the steeple
We sure are cute for two ugly people
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

We both have shiny happy fits of rage
You want more fans, I want more stage
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

You are always trying to keep it real
I'm in love with how you feel
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

I kiss you on the brain in the shadow of a train
I kiss you all starry eyed, my body's swinging from side to side
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

The pebbles forgive me, the trees forgive me
So why can't, you forgive me?
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

Du du du du du du dudu
Du du du du du du dudu
Du du du du du du dudu du

I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

Ok, ok enough of this. More listening to do. I just downloaded the Silversun Pickups' album Carnavas so we'll see.

I and a bunch of my friends went to Taken By Cars' album launch in Route 196 last Saturday. We had a really great time.

Burnz and I met up in Metrowalk and then went straight to Route 196. I invited a lot of other people from the office but wasn't expecting anybody to come as these are people who don't normally go to gigs. Surprise, surprise! All of them came albeit too late that they missed the first few bands that played which was Ang Bandang Shirley and Chillitees. Good thing some of them arrived before Imago's set. Up Dharma Down wasn't able to play for reasons unknown but I know for a fact that they had a gig at Southridge in Alabang so I guess they couldn't make it. Could you if you had to go from Alabang to Katipunan in an hour?

So like I said I was with people who didn't normally watch live bands and who mostly listened to hip-hop, pop and dance music so I wasn't expecting them to enjoy a whole lot. But they did! Especially Taken By Cars!

I also bought the Taken By Cars album and got a free poster to go with it.

All in all one heck of a night.

I found this link for a survey you can take to get your Lakbayan grade. It's a grade to determine how much of the Philippines you've seen. My grade was pitiful.

My Lakbayan grade is C!

How much of the Philippines have you visited? Find out at Lakbayan!

Created by Eugene Villar.

I personally think that we should see more of our country instead of going abroad. For a beach lover like me, nothing is better than the Philippines (except of course if you have lots of money and can go to the Maldives or something). I have been to Boracay, El Nido in Palawan, Bantayan Island in Cebu, Puerto Galera, Laiya in Batangas, Caylabne in Cavite, Bolinao in Pangasinan and I still think I have yet to see the best of the Philippines.

I don't like to sightsee too much though. I just want to sit by the beach, listen to good music and just stare at the horizon. It's a great way to relax. Plus, it's times like those that justify why I have to work everyday.

Excited na ako! Syet ang lupet nun. Up Dharma Down tas Incubus?!??! Not bad for my first concert. Hehe.

frailty

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

i hate it when i get sick. right now i have this dry cough that won't go away and it's making me feel helpless. it's like i lost all my energy or something. when one is sick, it keeps one from doing the things one wants to do.

my officemates and i are supposed to go wall climbing after shift and i seriously want to come. i haven't climbed in ages! i already have all my moves mapped out in my head. now i'm getting second thoughts because i just feel so... weak. and if you ask people who have tried the sport, they will tell you that you need all your strength.

i hope i do get better in the next 6 hours or i will feel really bummed.

Taken By Cars

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

I first heard this band in Saguijo last May of 2007. They were playing their set while my friend and I were smoking outside the bar waiting for Up Dharma Down's set. I heard this catchy tune so I immediately looked inside to see who was playing. None of the band members looked familiar so I asked Ean (Up Dharma Down's drummer) who the band was. He said, "Taken By Cars".

Fast forward to now, they are about to have their album launch in 5 different bars all over Manila. I grabbed some of their songs on Myspace (if anyone from Taken By Cars somehow stumbles on this blog in the future, don't worry I will buy your album in Route 196 on Feb 2 and I would probably have it signed!)  and sampled some of the tracks. They were amazing! My favorite is Uh Oh and Neon Brights.

So I'm really looking forward to coming to their album launch in Route 196 on Feb 2, see them live again and get a copy of their album (they're indie so there's next to no chance of getting the album from the record bars here). Imago, Cambio, Up Dharma Down, Ang Bandang Shirley and Chillitees are also playing. How can I go wrong?

Check out Taken By Cars' Myspace or Channel V Amp (if you're in an office where Myspace is blocked hehe). Enjoy!

Chinatown Adventure

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So my family and I went to Tito Robert's birthday lunch at Toho Restaurant in Chinatown. There were two vehicles, one a Camry and the other a Space Gear. We were an hour late for lunch and I was starving. Then I found out that the brakes of the Space Gear broke down. That was the start of our adventure.

The adults rode in the car while we kids rode 3 trikes (there were 7 of us) to go to the Salazar Bakery. They bought a lot of hopia and other baked goods. Then we rode 3 kalesas to Eng Bee Tin which was this tiny chinese deli that sold even more hopia and stuff. I bought a pack of Pastillas to nibble while I watch TV in my room.

From there, we decided that the adults are riding home in the car and we kids will ride the LRT 2 to Santolan station in Cainta. It was easy enough. But it was pretty stressful because we were with children who have no experience commuting let alone riding the LRT station or the jeepney!

The trikes dropped us off to the Carriedo station. We were all ready to buy our tickets but the lady who sold them told us that we were at the LRT 1 station. So we had to go back down again and ride a jeepney that will take us to the LRT 2 Recto station.

No offense to other people but I really hate Manila's busiest streets like Avenida, Recto, Quiapo and Cubao. These are places when you have to hug your bag at all times to prevent it from being snatched or slashed. And when we were walking along Recto, I hated it all the more. I was scared the entire time thinking that one of the kids will be left behind and get lost amidst the shuffle.

So anyway, we got to the train station and immediately got some tickets. We also took a bunch of pictures since like I said, it was the kids' first time to ride the train.

We got off Santolan station and ate fishballs while we waited for Tito Mike to pick us up. It was all quite an adventure. It's amazing how contagious the kids can be. It was like seeing the LRT for the first time.

i'm bored, seriously. a very loooong vacation is what i need. i haven't filed a leave from work in a very long time. good thing it's almost the weekend. no plans for saturday night though. i would probably just sleep it off. or go out if somebody texts me. on sunday the whole family's going to ongpin to gorge on some chinese since it's my uncle's birthday. i know its weird to be excited about that but my family's a bit weird too as proven by the pic below, so that should be fun.

it's killing me because I and 20 of my friends are booked for April in Boracay but i just can't wait! it's going to be a blast for sure!

there are also a lot of great gigs to go to this quarter but it's hard to find someone to go with you especially if only a few of your friends listen to that kind of stuff.

now the fun part of starting a new blog, customizing it! be back shortly!
